How to Review Your Fertiliser Program Before the Next Major Input Spend

A fertiliser program should not be reviewed only when something goes wrong.

It should be reviewed before the next major input spend.

That is especially true when fertiliser costs are high and margins are under pressure.

The question is not simply:

What should we apply next?

The better question is:

Is the current system returning enough from what is already being applied?

That is where a fertiliser program review becomes valuable.


A proper review goes deeper than product and rate

Product and rate matter.

Timing matters.

Application method matters.

But those are only part of the fertiliser decision.

A proper fertiliser program review should also look at what happens after the input enters the soil system.

Is the nutrient retained?

Is it cycled?

Is it made available?

Can roots access it?

Is soil biology supporting the process?

Is soil structure helping or limiting movement?

Is the input returning enough per hectare?

If those questions are not being asked, the review is incomplete.

Before reviewing products, start with the commercial objective.

What is the farm trying to achieve?

The fertiliser program should be assessed against the outcome it is meant to support.

Farmers do not need inputs for the sake of inputs.

They need input programs that return value.

Step 2: Review what has already been applied

The next step is to look at the current program.

What has been applied?

When was it applied?

At what rate?

Under what seasonal conditions?

What was the expected response?

What was the actual response?

This helps separate assumption from performance.

A program may look strong on paper, but if the paddock response is weak, uneven or inconsistent, the next question is why.

That is where nutrient efficiency becomes important.

Step 3: Look for nutrient loss

Nutrients can be lost before the plant uses them.

Leaching, volatilisation, runoff and poor retention can reduce fertiliser value.

If nutrient value is leaving the active root zone or becoming unavailable before the plant captures it, the farm may be losing margin.

A fertiliser program review should ask:

Where could nutrient value be escaping?

How much of the applied input is likely being used?

What conditions are increasing the risk of loss?

This matters because fertiliser that does not become useful plant growth still costs money.

Step 4: Look for lock-up and poor availability

Not all nutrient inefficiency comes from loss.

Some nutrients remain in the soil but are not available to the plant in the form or timing required.

This can create a false sense of shortage.

The paddock underperforms, so the assumption becomes that more input is required.

But if nutrients are present and not being accessed, then more product may not address the real issue.

A fertiliser program review should ask:

What is already in the soil?

Is it available?

Is pH affecting nutrient access?

Is biology supporting conversion and cycling?

Is the plant able to capture what is present?

Step 5: Assess root performance

Roots are central to nutrient efficiency.

A plant can only use what it can access.

If roots are weak, shallow, restricted or stressed, fertiliser return can be limited.

Compaction, poor structure, poor moisture movement, biological imbalance and stress can all reduce root performance.

A fertiliser program review should ask:

Are roots strong enough to support the current input program?

Are roots exploring enough soil volume?

Is the root zone functioning properly?

Are conditions helping or restricting uptake?

Weak roots can turn a strong fertiliser program into an underperforming one.

Step 6: Assess soil biology

Soil biology belongs in a fertiliser program review because nutrient cycling is biological as well as chemical and physical.

Biological activity affects organic matter conversion, nutrient movement, root-zone function and the soil conditions around plant access.

This does not mean biology replaces agronomy.

It means biology should support agronomy.

A fertiliser program review should ask:

Is biology supporting nutrient cycling?

Is organic matter being converted effectively?

Is the root zone biologically active?

Is the soil system functioning, or is it relying too heavily on repeated input?

Step 7: Review soil structure and moisture movement

Soil structure affects air, water, roots and nutrient movement.

If soil is compacted or poorly structured, everything becomes harder.

Roots are restricted.

Moisture movement is limited.

Nutrient movement is reduced.

Biological activity can suffer.

In those conditions, simply increasing fertiliser spend may not solve the problem.

A fertiliser program review should ask:

Is soil structure helping or limiting nutrient efficiency?

Is compaction present?

Is water moving properly through the root zone?

Can roots access the nutrients being applied?

Step 8: Measure against return per hectare

The final review point is return per hectare.

This is where the conversation becomes practical.

A fertiliser program should be assessed by what it returns, not only what it costs.

If input costs are rising, farmers need to know whether the program is producing enough value.

That means reviewing paddock response, yield or pasture performance, input cost per hectare, nutrient efficiency, soil function, root performance, production outcome and margin.

This is not about cutting inputs blindly.

It is about making sure the system is capable of turning input spend into production.

Before the next major fertiliser spend, farmers should ask:

1. What outcome is the program meant to deliver?

The input strategy should be tied to a commercial outcome.

2. What has already been applied?

Review product, rate, timing, method and seasonal conditions.

3. Where could nutrient value be lost?

Assess leaching, volatilisation, runoff and poor retention.

4. Are nutrients locked up or unavailable?

Nutrients may be present but not plant-available.

5. Are roots strong enough to access the input?

Weak roots can reduce return from applied nutrients.

6. Is biology supporting nutrient cycling?

Soil biology affects the movement and conversion of nutrients.

7. Is soil structure supporting root-zone function?

Poor structure can restrict water, air, roots and nutrient movement.

8. Is the program returning enough per hectare?

The final test is commercial return.
